Rosy from Mexico, in an anon chat as a guest on Dinchat

Do I have to say who I am?

No. Starting a chat on Dinchat doesn't require your real name, email or phone number. The other person sees a display name, your country and whatever you choose to show or tell.

What is anon chat?

Anon chat is talking to someone online without first telling them who you are. No real name, no linked social profile, no phone number passed across the table. The conversation comes first and the identity stays with you.

The idea is as old as the internet. It used to live in big public rooms where dozens of people typed at once under made-up names. Today it mostly looks different, and so does this site. On Dinchat it is a conversation between two people, started as a guest, in a browser tab.

What has not changed is the reason people want it. Sometimes you would like to talk without your job title, your follower count or your family name attached to every sentence.

What can other people see about you as a guest?

Only what the product shows and what you decide to add. You begin as a guest, and starting a chat does not require your real name, your email address or your phone number, so none of those are there for anyone to see. The table puts the two sides next to each other.

Whatever you write in a messageYour accounts on other apps and sites
Your face and surroundings, if you turn the camera onAnything at all on camera while it is off
Your voice, on a voice or video callWhat you look like, on a voice match

The right-hand column stays true only as long as you keep it that way. The fastest way to stop being anonymous is to say who you are.

Are there anonymous chat rooms here?

Not in the old sense, and it is better to say so plainly. Dinchat is not built around a lobby full of people all typing at once, and there is no room list to pick from.

What you get in its place is a list of the people who are online right now and a conversation with whichever one of them you choose. It keeps the open-door feeling of a room, where you walk in and can see who is there, and loses the noise. Nobody talks over you, and a conversation cannot be derailed by a third person.

If you miss the old rooms and wonder where they went, there is a short history on the what happened to chat rooms page.

How anonymous is anonymous?

Anonymous here means you are not asked to identify yourself to the person you are talking to. It does not mean invisible. Dinchat is a service like any other and handles the technical data a website needs in order to run, which the privacy policy sets out. Anyone who tells you an online chat leaves no trace anywhere is selling something.

The practical rule is simple: the other person knows what you tell them and what you show them. If your camera is on, they can see your face and your room. If you mention your workplace, they know your workplace. Stay vague about the things that could locate you, and the conversation stays as private as it began.

Can you chat anonymously without registration?

Yes. You enter as a guest when the page loads, and you can look at who is online and start talking from there. No form stands between you and the first conversation.

Later you may be asked to sign in for certain things, for example if you want the people you follow and your coins to come with you when you change phones. That choice is yours, and it comes after you have tried the place, not before. Signing in changes what Dinchat can keep for you; it does not change what the person you are talking to is shown. The steps are on the how Dinchat works page.

How does a random match keep you anonymous?

Tap Match and you are connected one-on-one with someone who is also online and looking for a conversation. Neither of you picked the other, and neither of you had to introduce yourself first. No names are required, and the conversation goes wherever it goes.

You choose video or voice before you start. A match is the most anonymous way to begin, since the other person has not even seen your card in the list. And if it goes well, you can follow that person, which is the one step that turns a one-off match into someone you can find again.

Want to talk anonymously without a camera?

Pick a voice match. Both cameras stay off, so the other person hears you and sees nothing. It is more human than typing and far less exposed than video.

You can also stay in text the whole time by sending messages from someone's profile. The random voice chat page explains what a voice match is like and what to say in the first thirty seconds.

Just need to get something off your chest?

Sometimes you are not looking for a new friend. You have had a rough day and want to say it out loud to somebody who does not know your boss, your ex or your mother. Saying it to someone who doesn't know you can be a real relief, and it is a perfectly good reason to be here. Say up front that you mostly need someone to listen; it tells the other person what kind of conversation this is and lets them decide whether they are up for it.

A guest session suits this well, because nothing you say is attached to a name the other person can look up. Keep the details that identify other people out of it too: "my manager" works as well as her full name. For anything heavier than a bad day, see the note at the end of chat with people online.

How do you stay private once the chat gets good?

The risky moment is not the first minute. It is the fortieth, when the conversation is going well and sharing your handle on another app feels natural. There is no rule against it, and plenty of friendships move on that way. Just make it a decision and not a reflex.

  • Follow first. A follow lets you find each other again here, without either of you giving away a phone number.
  • Give it more than one conversation. If someone is still good company the third time you talk, that tells you more than any first impression.
  • Saying no is fine. "I'd rather keep chatting here for now" is a complete answer. Someone worth talking to will accept it.
  • Walk away from pressure. Anyone who pushes hard for personal details, another app or money has told you what they are after. End the chat. The safety tips show where block and report are.

Questions about anonymous chat

Is anon chat free?

On Dinchat it is free to start. Entering as a guest and looking at who is online cost nothing. Where coins come in is explained on the is Dinchat free page.

Where can I chat anonymously online?

On Dinchat, by opening the site as a guest. There is no registration form, and nobody asks for your real name. Pick someone from the online list or use Random Match to start talking.

Is anonymous chatting safe?

It is as safe as what you share. Not giving your name protects you; handing over personal details or money does the opposite. You can block or report anyone who behaves badly.

Which way of chatting shows the least about me?

Written messages reveal the least, voice adds your voice only, and video shows your face and your room. Dinchat offers all three, so you can choose how much to show.

Are there anonymous chatting apps?

There are, though many want a phone number at install. Dinchat runs in your phone's browser, needs no download, and can be added to your home screen so it opens like an app.

Can I talk to one person instead of a room?

Yes, that is how it works here. You talk with one person at a time, either someone you chose from the online list or someone you were matched with.

Do anonymous chat rooms still exist?

Some are still around, but many of the big public ones have closed. Dinchat is not a room site; it offers a list of who is online and conversations with one person at a time.

Can I change how much I show partway through?

Yes. You can begin in messages, move to a voice match another day and keep video for when you choose. Each step is yours to take or skip.

Can the other person find out who I am?

Only from what you tell or show them. They see a display name and a country, not your email address or phone number. Mentioning your surname, employer or street is what gives you away.
