How do I start a voice chat?

On the match screen, switch the match type to voice and tap Match. Allow the microphone and you are talking one-on-one, cameras off. It works as a guest.

What is random voice chat?

Random voice chat connects you with a person you have not met and lets the two of you talk out loud, with no video. You tap once, the site finds someone who is also free to talk, and a moment later there is a voice in your ear.

It sits halfway between typing and video. You get tone, laughter and timing, the things that make a conversation feel like one, without having to think about your hair, your room or your lighting. For a first contact with someone new, that balance is hard to beat.

How does a voice match work on Dinchat?

On the match screen, set the match type to voice and tap Match. Your browser asks for permission to use the microphone, and Dinchat connects you one-on-one with someone who is online. Both cameras stay off for the whole call. You talk, and if you want to add something that is easier to write, you can type in the call as well.

If the match is not a good fit, you can move on to another. A voice match draws on the same free matches as a video match; what that means for coins is on the is Dinchat free page. Nothing else is needed: it runs straight from the browser on your phone or computer.

  1. 1

    Choose voice

On the match screen, switch the match type from video to voice.

  2. 2

    Allow the microphone

The browser asks for it the first time. Say yes, and you are ready to talk.

  3. 3

    Say hello

You are connected to one person. Talk, type if you like, and end the call whenever you want.

Why start with voice instead of video?

Because hearing someone is a gentler first step than seeing them. A voice tells you a surprising amount, whether a person is relaxed, funny, kind or in a hurry, and it does so without either of you being looked at. On Dinchat we think of voice as the first step in getting to know somebody, not the whole staircase.

It also fits real life. Maybe you are in an old T-shirt on the sofa, or the room is a mess, or you are simply shy on camera. None of that matters on a voice match. You can talk while you cook, tidy up or lie in the dark, which is not something a video call lets you get away with.

And for nervous starters it removes the hardest part. If the camera is the part you dread, leave it for later and begin with sound. After a few good calls, turning the camera on for someone you already like is a much smaller step.

Is voice chat anonymous?

The other person hears your voice and does not see your face. They are not shown your real name, your email or your number, and you do not need to register to begin, so in practice it works as anonymous voice chat.

A voice is still personal, of course, and anything you say about yourself is known once it is said. The full picture of what a guest does and does not reveal is on the anon chat page.

Are there voice chat rooms?

No. If you are looking for a channel where many people sit and talk together, a voice match is not that. It connects two people, and only two.

That is a deliberate trade. In a busy shared channel the loudest person wins and newcomers tend to stay silent. With two of you, you always get your turn to speak, and the conversation is about the pair of you. If what you wanted was a place to talk and be heard, a voice match gets you there faster.

Voice, video or text: which one for a first chat?

It depends on how much pressure you want and how much you want to learn about the other person. None of the three is better in general. Use the table to pick for today, and remember you can move up or down a step with the same person later.

What do you say in the first thirty seconds?

Something short, friendly and easy to answer. On a voice call there is no face to read, so silence feels longer than it is. Having one line ready gets you past it. Two that only make sense on a voice call, which is exactly why they work (more general openers are on the meet new people online page):

  • Hey! Can you hear me okay? I'm calling from a very quiet kitchen.
  • Hi there. Before anything else: where in the world am I calling?

After the opener, ask one follow-up question about whatever they said. Two questions in, most calls are running by themselves. And if the line goes quiet, saying "I'm still here, just thinking" is completely fine.

Liked the voice? What can you do next?

Follow the person. It keeps them on your list after the call ends, so the conversation does not have to be a one-off. From their profile you can then send a message, or start a video call when you both feel like putting faces to voices.

This is the part that makes voice a beginning. You hear someone first, write to them later, and see them when it feels right. For more on going from a first chat to people you actually know, see meet new people online.

How do you set up for a good voice call?

With no picture to lean on, sound is the whole experience, for you and for the person listening. Five small things make a bigger difference than any microphone you could buy.

  • Use earphones if you have them. They stop the other person hearing their own voice echo back, and they keep the conversation private if someone else is at home.
  • Find the quietest corner, not the nicest one. A television, a fan or an open window is far louder on the other end than it seems to you.
  • Hold the phone still. A microphone brushing against a sleeve or a pillow is the most common reason people ask "sorry, what?".
  • Slow down a little. Across accents, and with no lips to read, a slightly slower pace is a kindness. It also makes you sound calmer than you may feel.
  • Let pauses happen. A two-second silence is normal on a call. Count to three before you rush to fill it; often the other person was about to speak.

If the two of you do not share much of a language, type the difficult sentence in the call. Written messages are translated; speech is not.

Questions about random voice chat

Is random voice chat free?

On Dinchat it is free to start. Voice matches draw on the same free matches as video. Where coins come in is explained on the is Dinchat free page.

How does a voice match pick people?

It connects you with someone who is online and looking for a match at the same moment. There is no profile or questionnaire behind it, so who you get is down to chance and timing.

Does the other person see a phone number when I call?

No. A voice match runs in the browser and no phone number is involved on either side.

Can I make a random voice call from my phone?

Yes. Open Dinchat in your phone's browser, choose a voice match and allow the microphone. It works on iPhone and Android without installing anything.

Do I need a headset?

No. Your phone's or laptop's built-in microphone and speaker are enough. Earphones do help in a noisy place, and they keep the other person's voice private if someone is nearby.

Can I call random people without showing my face?

Yes. A voice match keeps the camera off from start to finish. Your face is not shown unless you later choose to start a video call with that person.

Do I have to sign up before a voice call?

No. A guest session is enough for a first voice match: open the site, choose voice and tap Match.

Can I type during a voice call?

Yes. You can send written messages while the call is running, which helps with names, spellings and anything that is hard to say across a language gap.

Can I switch to video with someone I met by voice?

Yes. Follow them, and from their profile you can start a video call when you both feel like it.

You don't have to be camera-ready. You only have to say hello.
